Mistbenders Backstory

"When steam is mixed with Spirit Sand, the Mist Beast materializes from the depths of the swirling haze, heralding the dawn of a spectacular new era: The Age of Mist."

In the cosmic expanse of The Primordial Sea, there exists a clam-like Divine Beast known as "Shen." It lies ensconced within the realm of dreams, breathing forth vapor that weaves countless interconnected dreamscapes into the void. If Shen was ever to awaken from its slumber, these dreamscapes would vanish like dissipating fog.

The Mortal Realm is but one of the dreamscapes created by Shen's subconscious.

One fateful day, Spirit Beasts from realms beyond descended upon the Mortal Realm under the noble guidance of the Kirin. They forged a harmonious pact with humanity, uniting to thwart the looming threat of Nihilus, the physical manifestation of the Void, and embarking on a path towards prosperity.

Whether through noble sacrifice or the passage of time, the Kirin, her guardian Kasar, and the other Spirit Beasts eventually disappeared. Yet, from the heart of Mirage City, manifestations of the Spirit Beasts were seen amidst the billowing smoke and ash of underwater volcanoes, and a revelation was made: Upon the demise of a Spirit Beast, their essence condensed into Spirit Sand and scattered into the sea. If one were to combine this Spirit Sand with steam, one could harness the power of the Spirit Beast within the sand and manifest it as a Mist Beast.

This monumental turning point in human advancement would usher in the great Age of Mist.

Shen:

An ancient Divine Beast lying in eternal slumber in the cosmic expanse of The Primordial Sea. Its visage resembles that of a clam. Within the Realm of Dreams, it exhales vapor that conjures a myriad of dreamscapes in the infinite expanse of the void. If Shen was ever to awaken from its slumber, these dreamscapes would vanish like dissipating fog.

Nihilus:

A creature born within Shen's dreamscape that feeds not only upon oneiric lifeblood but also other creatures forged from dreams. Legend has it that once it devours Shen's dreamscape entirely, Shen shall awaken, and the Mortal Realm will transform back to vapor before ultimately being devoured by Nihilus.

The Battle of Mirage City:

The dreaded incursion of Nihilus into the Mortal Realm culminated in a cataclysmic showdown set in Mirage City, where Spirit Beasts and humans stood united. At the apex of this cosmic conflict, the Kirin and countless other Spirit Beasts sacrificed themselves to banish Nihilus back into the Void. Thus, forever etched in the annals of history, the world shall honor this epochal clash as The Battle of Mirage City in perpetuity.

Mirage Festival:

To honor the memory of the Kirin, each year on the day of her first arrival to Mirage City, which coincides with the winter solstice, a celebration known as the Mirage Festival is held. On this sacred occasion, the Guardian of Mirage City sounds the sacred Kirin Horn, conjuring the majestic form of the Kirin and leading the city in heartfelt prayers and blessings for the city's savior.

The Kirin Horn:

After the Kirin's dispersal, the sole remnant of her that endures in the world is enshrined within the Kirin Tower.

The Kirin, transcending mortality and immortality alike, left the Kirin Horn as an anchor to summon her essence anew, ceaselessly echoing through the ages. Upon rebirth, the Kirin remains in a constant state of resonance with the Kirin Horn, awaiting the destined reunion that will gradually restore her to her full power.

Yet, concealed within the Kirin Horn lies a great secret—the way back to the Spirit Realm. A truth that transcends all mortal comprehension.

Herald of Nihilus:

The consciousness of Nihilus can extend beyond the Void, and acts as a seductive power forever tempting mortal souls. Its true form lies beyond this world, intangible and invisible to the naked eye.

The Heralds of Nihilus, bearers of the Nihilus's malevolent will, constitute an organized, disciplined, and hierarchically structured legion of fanatics. Blinded by their own selfish desires, they hold an unwavering faith in Nihilus, fervently dismantling and enacting its will, with ambitions to attain an existence transcending life and death.

Master Kasar & Aldous:

Through the countless epochs that followed Kirin's sacrifice, her guardian Spirit Beast, Kasar, stood vigilant over Mirage City. When the sands of time had drained Kasar's very existence, he left the power of Spirit Sand to the humans and his own powers to Aldous's clan. Thus, the clan assumed the mantle of Mirage City's new guardians.

Spirit Sand & Mistbenders:

After a Spirit Beast fades away, its essence gradually transforms into Spirit Sand. When Spirit Sand is combined with a special vapor, a Mistbender can summon the Spirit Beast in a mist state and manifest a portion of the Spirit Beast's abilities.

To distinguish these creatures from the original Spirit Beasts, humans referred to them as Mist Beasts. As humans slowly gain mastery over these enigmatic beings, an epochal shift unfurls as the Age of Mist dawns upon the realm.
